Africa Is A Feeling: Africa Day Poetry Night With Multichoice & Bittersweet

To celebrate Africa Month, Multichoice Zambia held a number of events. One of them was the sponsorship of the Poetry night under the theme Africa is a feeling at Raddison blue on the 28^th of May, 2016 in Lusaka.The event was done in conjunction with Bitter Sweet Poetry.

This evening, we want to welcome you to a very unique event in the MultiChoice calender. This event is unique because it is designed to remind us of our African heritage. Tonight’s event will indeed take us through a journey of our African renaissance. Africa freedom day reminds us of the great cost at which our fore fathers fought for our freedom, the freedoms that we enjoy today. Because of that freedom, we can plan our future as a continent. A good case is the just ended Africa Development Bank (AfDB) meeting that is saying we need to plan how we progress as Africa economically.

As such, MultiChoice as a business born and bred in Africa, celebrates the whole month of May as Africa month. In doing so, we provide content that reminds us of our different cultures all through the month. Through our platforms, DStv and GOtv, we celebrate both the people of the continent and their talents. But importantly, we celebrate you, our subscribers for making us the best video entertainment business in Africa. MultiChoice Zambia is 21 years and growing strong in Zambia because of you.

What can we say about tonight? We have brought you to the fire place, so that we could each be warmed up in our hearts by some of the great poetic talent in Zambia. As the Bitter Sweet Poets host us, let us recollect on our heritage, our freedoms and think of ways to forge ahead to a greater Africa as one people.

It’s customary at polo matches to invite the public onto the field at halftime to tread in the divots kicked up by the horses.  The custom has a practical as well as a public-relations value: the field is repaired for the teams by the time they begin the second half of play.  It’s not clear who was the first enterprising club manager to realize he had an abundant and cheap grounds-keeping crew at his disposal, but old-timers will tell you the job used to be done by hired help.

Conserving Our Herds: The Great Herding To Ele Fest

Zambia is home to many other important wildlife populations which need our protection before it's too late. The EleFest and “Our Zambia Our Wildlife” song is a call to Zambia and the rest of the world to support conservation efforts and celebrate the people and organisations who are making an impact. Sending the message out to everyone that we are the generation with whom the responsibility lies: to report wildlife crime, reject illegal bushmeat, value our wilderness areas and support the wildlife police officers, men and women risking their lives on a daily basis to protect our wildlife.

Under the hasgtag #OurZambiaOurWildlife, the herds will gather on 14^th May for the second annual Ele-Fest. This years line up includes internationally acclaimed act Mokoomba who will no doubt have the herds stomping their feet to their infecious global rythms. Native acts also showing solidarity for the cause include Zambian songstress Maureen Lilanda, the talented songwriter, instrumentalist and live mavin James Sakala @JamesTSakala backed by the Elect Band @ElectBand, vocal sesnstion winner of the 2016 Best New Artist at the Mosi ZMA’s Wezi @Wezi_heartssound, the Lenshina crooner and winner of the 2016 Mosi ZMA for Best Live Recording Mumba Yahci @MumbaYachi and the indiginous Kapiri Mposhi 4.0. Also look out for new musical sensession Chembo Music @ChemboMusic who also joined the lineup slated to perform will be unleashing her new single Abena Mavis live on the Ele-Fest stage.

Zambia is home to a breathtaking diversity of rare wildlife and habitats. It is home to the world’s largest mammal migration (Straw Coloured Fruit Bats, Kasanka National Park), second largest wildebeest migration (Liuwa Plains National Park), one of the world’s most important African Wild Dog strongholds (Kafue National Park) and Lion strongholds (South Luangwa National Park). The tourism industry employs more than 80,000 people and contributes more than K9.2 billion to Zambia’s economy every year. There is a huge growth potential for this industry especially as it doesn’t rely directly on rain or copper prices. 

The elephant population of Zambia is one of the most significant in Africa but their numbers are threatened by ivory poaching and habitat loss. Experts have reported that 100 elephants are being killed every day in Africa. Elephants are killed for their ivory tusks, which are used for ornaments and medicine mostly in Asia. 

Zambia’s elephant population has reduced to a tenth of numbers which were reported 50 years ago. In the 1960s Zambia was home to approximately 250,000 elephants, whereas today estimates reach only around 21,000. Recent reports have congratulated the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and supporting conservation organisations in halting the rapid decline experienced in previous years but now the challenge is to continue to protect the remaining vulnerable populations from the ever-present threat of poaching.

As well as elephants, Zambia is also home to the most trafficked animal on the planet: the pangolin. It is illegal to capture or sell these animals and people found guilty of this offence can go to jail for 5 years. Our pangolin population is at threat. If you see anyone selling a pangolin, you should report it immediately to Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW).

Wildlife is being killed in our national parks at alarming rates, the Big 5 and in-particular elephants and game such as impalas. The importance events like Ele Feast to fighting and curbing the vice of poaching and the eminent extinction of animals in the wild is crucial to the cause and also provides enlightenment to the masses. With over 144,000 elephants brutally murdered and lost to poaching, it is important for the herds to herd to Ele Fest and support the movement headed by Game Rangers International @GameRangersInt and supported by WWF @wwfzambia, the Department of National Park & Wildlife and the Ministry of Tourism & Arts. Hosts for The Voice Nigeria Revealed: Show to Begin Airing on 10 April

Leading Nigerian presenter Osakioduwa and on-air TV personality Stephanie Coker have been announced as the presenters for M-Net/Africa Magic The Voice Nigeria, brought to you by Airtel in association with Coca Cola. The Voice Nigeria will begin airing on 10 April, 2016, on Africa Magic Showcase channel 151 and Africa Magic Urban channel 153, Sundays at 8:00pm CAT. As host, Ik will work his effortless magic and connect the contestants and coaches with the audience, while Stephanie’s infectious energy will spark up social media engagement. Her key role will be to engage with viewers and talents in the show, as the fans at home send in live tweets and messages during the live shows.

A great way to catch up with The Voice Nigeria, is through the recently launched; “The Voice Nigeria” social media application, which can be downloaded on the iOS and Google Play stores.The Voice Nigeria App grants access to videos, news, weekly games and more as the show progresses.

Speaking on this new development, the Regional Director, M-Net West Africa, Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu said: “We are very excited to be bringing The Voice Nigeria to your screens. Since its original launch in 2010, The Voice has won audiences in countries like the US, Australia, South Africa and the UK, where other renowned artistes have occupied the show’s famous red chairs as coaches. The Voice Nigeria employs the same format including two presenters playing separate roles. The presenters will work as a bridge connecting all active angles of the show.

Ik started his career in entertainment in 2001 with a job at Rhythm 93.7. After a brief sojourn in the world of advertising (1yr plus), Ik decided to return to his first love: Radio Presentation in 2003, and has continued to wow fans on radio since then. His comfort and skill on the microphone soon found him being pushed to try his hands on TV presentation. Ik has been selected to present the various shows Studio 53 , Temptation Nigeria, “Comedy Club: Live in Lagos” and he has been the host of MNet’s Big Brother Africa for the past 6 years

In 2014, Africa Magic encouraged Ik to take things a step further, and commissioned him to produce a new show for the channel. Ik designed, executive produced and presented Highlites With Ik. The show was an instant success and is currently in its second season (2015). Ik continues to hone his skill as a compere of events and is in very high demand today.

STEPHANIE COKER

Growing up in North London and prior to her arrival in Lagos, Nigeria, she worked on television networks like BBC, Bauer Media and London 360. In Nigeria she has worked with Cool FM as a co-host, MTV Base and recently Ebony Life TV. She has starred on one of Africa’s most successful television series, Tinsel and has been signed on by Bailey’s.

She continues to hone her skills as a writer, and produces her new web series “Steph Rocks”.

Stephanie is a versatile and fearless television presenter and actress who continues to shine on the big screen and on radio.

Zed Top 10 Presenter Search: Here Are The Top 20 Entries!

The long wait is over. After receiving an overwhelming response from all over Zambia to the Zed Top 10 presenter search callout, Zambezi Magic has now shortlisted the top 20 entries.  These talented finalists represent a diverse range of presenting styles, techniques and looks, all with great potential to become the ultimate Zed Top 10 video jockey.

The channel now needs the help of the viewers to pick the Top 10. Starting on Friday the 11^th of March to Friday 18^th of March 2016, for a full week, the viewers will be able to vote for their favourite 10 presenters.

Addiel Dzinoreva, Head of Zambezi Magic said “The Zed Top 10 is one of Zambezi Magic’s most popular shows every week. Zambezi Magic is looking for a multi lingual and charismatic individual, between 18 and 26 years old, who is passionate about television, music and the world of entertainment. It’s a great opportunity for any young Zambian who believes they have what it takes to be the very first video jockey on Zambezi Magic.”

For this round of the talent search, viewers have an opportunity to pick the top 10 presenters and eliminate the bottom 10. Viewers can participate by simply going to http://zambezimagic.dstv.com/zed-top-10-presenter-search-top-20-finalists/, viewing the Top 20 entries, then voting for their favorite presenter using the online poll. Viewers are encouraged to create their own top 10 lists and share, comment, debate and defend their choices.

“Our viewers are now in a position to end the dreams of at least 10 prospects and at the same time move another ten closer to their dream of becoming a television star. So we want everyone to participate and for friends, family, and colleagues it’s an opportunity to campaign and make a case for their favourites.” Dzinoreva said.

Zambezi Magic has provided various opportunities for local talent in the arts and film industries to show case their talent on DStv Channel 160. Since its entry onto the market, in July last year, the channel has launched various shows that include lifestyle, musical countdown, movies, drama series and religious programmes from six different countries in Southern Africa. The introduction of a Zambian on air presenter for the Zed Top 10 is one of the many new local talents coming to Zambezi Magic this year.
