MultiChoice Africa opens History Channel to all DStv Compact Subscribers from June 13 – July 11

 

This month, MultiChoice Africa continues to bring its Compact Subscribers more entertainment and value with the HISTORY® channel open month. The channel will be available to all DStv's Compact subscribers across Africa from Monday, June 13 to Monday, July 11.

Making its debut on HISTORY® (DStv 186) on Wednesday, June 15 at 20:30 CAT, is the highly- anticipated television event Roots, the four-part, eight-hour series developed by HISTORY and produced by A+E Studios. During this four week open-window HISTORY will broadcast new and exclusive shows, along with top-rated return titles that Compact subscribers will not have had access to previously.  Roots will also be repeated on Lifetime on Sundays at 8pm (from June 19) following its debut on HISTORY. 

Based on the best-selling novel by Alex Haley, Roots recounts the journey of one family’s will to survive, endure, and ultimately carry on their legacy despite enormous hardship and inhumanity.

“Nearly 40 years ago I had the privilege to be a part of an epic television event that started an important conversation in America,” said LeVar Burton, co-executive producer and the actor who played the lead role of Kunta Kinte in the original 1977 version. “I am incredibly proud to be a part of this new retelling and start the dialogue again, at a time when it is needed more than ever."

Spanning multiple generations, the lineage begins with young Kunta Kinte, who is captured in his homeland of The Gambia and sold into slavery. Throughout the series, the family continues to face adversity that reveals powerful truths about the universal resilience of the human spirit.

For one night only, musical legend Johnny Cleg @JohnnyCleggReal will be performing his vast repertoire of hits from a catalog that has span over 3 decades.

The English born Johnny Cleg begun his career at age 14 when he met Zulu street musician who schooled him over a period of 2 years in Zulu music and dancing. At 16 Clegg met Sipho Mchunu with whom he formed a band Juluka which means sweat but was also the name of the bull owned by Mchunu. The band is renowned for its native South African sounds which are blends of maskanda (a type of Zulu folk) and mbaqanga which can be heard on songs such as African Sky Blue as well as I Call Your Name and the magnificent harmonies on Osiyeza. The genesis of deep house can be heard on songs such as Kilimanjaro with its heavy synths and percussion laden beat. In 1985 Juluka disbanded and Johnny Clegg went on to form a new band Savuka in 1986, with whom he enjoyed even greater international success. The latter bands sound was a departure from the traditional Zulu sound to a more Western pop rock sound. Both bands were interracial during apartheid, a cause for which he was arrested for violating apartheid laws. Scatterlings of Africa was featured in the 1989 Oscar-winning film Rainman and also appeared on Johnny Clegg & Savuka’s album Scatterlings which was released on Priority the same record label N.W.A was signed too.

Africa Is A Feeling: Africa Day Poetry Night With Multichoice & Bittersweet

To celebrate Africa Month, Multichoice Zambia held a number of events. One of them was the sponsorship of the Poetry night under the theme Africa is a feeling at Raddison blue on the 28^th of May, 2016 in Lusaka.The event was done in conjunction with Bitter Sweet Poetry.

This evening, we want to welcome you to a very unique event in the MultiChoice calender. This event is unique because it is designed to remind us of our African heritage. Tonight’s event will indeed take us through a journey of our African renaissance. Africa freedom day reminds us of the great cost at which our fore fathers fought for our freedom, the freedoms that we enjoy today. Because of that freedom, we can plan our future as a continent. A good case is the just ended Africa Development Bank (AfDB) meeting that is saying we need to plan how we progress as Africa economically.

As such, MultiChoice as a business born and bred in Africa, celebrates the whole month of May as Africa month. In doing so, we provide content that reminds us of our different cultures all through the month. Through our platforms, DStv and GOtv, we celebrate both the people of the continent and their talents. But importantly, we celebrate you, our subscribers for making us the best video entertainment business in Africa. MultiChoice Zambia is 21 years and growing strong in Zambia because of you.

What can we say about tonight? We have brought you to the fire place, so that we could each be warmed up in our hearts by some of the great poetic talent in Zambia. As the Bitter Sweet Poets host us, let us recollect on our heritage, our freedoms and think of ways to forge ahead to a greater Africa as one people.

It’s customary at polo matches to invite the public onto the field at halftime to tread in the divots kicked up by the horses.  The custom has a practical as well as a public-relations value: the field is repaired for the teams by the time they begin the second half of play.  It’s not clear who was the first enterprising club manager to realize he had an abundant and cheap grounds-keeping crew at his disposal, but old-timers will tell you the job used to be done by hired help.
