way through the show she asked the audience, “Do you know why I’m here?” Her riposte was music, with a knowing smile on her face. “Everything I do in life, everywhere I go and whatever
decisions I make are based on music.”
The sentiments of the artiste tallied with those of
the owner of the venue Ben Thurairatnam who cited that his mission on behalf of his establishment
was, “delivering good entertainment for music
aficionados in Zambia.” On 21st
November 2015, The Web delivered a world class Sold Out show. Ladies
and gentleman the World Famous soul
singer/songwriter sensation… Joss
Stone @JossStone
The 550 strong capacity crowd of soul and blues enthusiast jam packed The Web. The multi genre hub of live music was chosen as one of the stops by the Grammy award winning performer and soul songstress on her Total World Tour. After 2 – 3 months of
organising, the wait was over. Up first
on stage to kick off the gig and move the crowd was Wezi
@Wezi_heartsound. The Zambian
songbird is the voice you’ve
been hearing on award winning hooks and verses on the airwaves, in clubs and performing live
of stage. Her rendition of Translate by Zone Fam has been the source of much social media buzz and with just
cause. That energy and vibe definitely translated into her captivating
performance. Her act
was enchanting and as natural and beautiful as her voice
and smile. She has clearly matured as an artist and her rich tone oozed poise
and her deportment showed tones of a budding songbird with promise
of yet more melodies in her career as a performer.
She had played Botswana the night
before and Zambia was next to receive the gift of soul on her nonstop global excursion which begun
in April 2004 of 204 countries. With an illustrious
career that has spun over a decade, the headline act’s set is
always causes of debate and difficult to predict. Soon as she
stepped onto the brightly lit stage
to an ovation of shouts, applause and whistling and
began to bellow the first notes of Super Duper Love (Are You Diggin’ on Me), I knew
my inner musical Jedi was strong. The three man band of a lead/rhythm
guitarist, the rubber band man
on bass and the drummer from the ATL, did not miss a beat and the two soul
sisters on backing vocals in tow
did not miss a wail. Her selection showed depth and an elaborate career, a mix of new material from
her 2015 rich reggae and dub laden
release Water for Your Soul such as Way Oh and This Ain’t Love, and classic
substance such as What We Gonna Do Now (which features
rapper Common on the album version).
Her aura and everything about her entire proceedings
was pure synergy and was in synch with the crowd, so much so such that she
even had a quick cup in between notes as any Brit would *laughs*.
She signed off with Right to Be Wrong
which was the second single from her critically acclaimed sophomore album Mind, Body and Soul. It was a charged performance which left the crowd chanting for more. An
honour to host you in Zambia Miss Stone, keep that soul coming. How
did I forget to mention how she did justice
with her rendition of I Put a Spell on You by the icon Ray Charles, yes the show was special, something magical and spiritual.
The Music was far from over for the night, the house band
was not done with the entertainment and had an ace up there sleeve. Nexus brought the funk the old school way and kept revelers
on the dance floor getting their shuffle and two
step on. Their set kicked off with Shalamar’s Night to Remember,
and kept it coming with that Luther classic All My Love, the Kool &
The Gang anthem Get Down On It,
that Lionel hit All Night Long and finally simmered
it down with Chaka’s Can’t Nobody. The lead
vocalist Nathalie did not relent neither did the tight neat ensemble on the beat and tempo, carrying on where Miss Stone had left off. And now for an intermission by Jude (the manager of The Web), who blew the situation to another stratosphere when he brought the house down with the Sexual Chocolate classic You Sexy Thing. Indeed the funk knows no bounds, and he too left it all on stage in that single performance. I could have been at the Apollo in Harlem at a performance of funk and soul grooves,
even Joss’s band members who blended into the crowd approved of the heat that was and is Nexus. It was poignant and out of sight.
Yes Jocelyn showed up and silenced the critics and non believers with a stellar sonic musical performance with her ensemble. During her three day visit of Zambia, Joss also collaborated with Zambian musical virtuoso
Mumba Yachi on a
song and visited the Lilayi Elephant Nursery (Orphanage). The Web and its management did a tremendous job of organizing a flawless event without any incident. This blogger on behalf of the freelance movement nation and worldwide thanks you for accommodating the craft of scribes at this occasion and august musical juncture. This gig is testament that Zambia is more than ready for more international acts, and the Web are on the good foot as a shining example as venue which has the state of the art equipment necessary to host world class events. “As The Web,
