If you have not already got your ticket for one of the biggest events of the year, you need to get that pre sale ticket now at K 200 only and avoid paying an extra K 100 at the gate or missing out on the event all together if the pre sale tickets sell out! With the VIP tickets already sold out, you know the Windhoek Winterfest @Windhoekbeer_NA on the 4th of June 2016 is going to be a musical extravaganza. For one night only, musical legend Johnny Cleg @JohnnyCleggReal will be performing his vast repertoire of hits from a catalog that has span over 3 decades.

The English born Johnny Cleg begun his career at age 14 when he met Zulu street musician who schooled him over a period of 2 years in Zulu music and dancing. At 16 Clegg met Sipho Mchunu with whom he formed a band Juluka which means sweat but was also the name of the bull owned by Mchunu. The band is renowned for its native South African sounds which are blends of maskanda (a type of Zulu folk) and mbaqanga which can be heard on songs such as African Sky Blue as well as I Call Your Name and the magnificent harmonies on Osiyeza. The genesis of deep house can be heard on songs such as Kilimanjaro with its heavy synths and percussion laden beat. In 1985 Juluka disbanded and Johnny Clegg went on to form a new band Savuka in 1986, with whom he enjoyed even greater international success. The latter bands sound was a departure from the traditional Zulu sound to a more Western pop rock sound. Both bands were interracial during apartheid, a cause for which he was arrested for violating apartheid laws. Scatterlings of Africa was featured in the 1989 Oscar-winning film Rainman and also appeared on Johnny Clegg & Savuka’s album Scatterlings which was released on Priority the same record label N.W.A was signed too.

This one is for the grown folk and the musos. Shout out to R&G @RandGZambia on this one as I get my pantsula on. I was born when the he released his 7th album (do the maths of how old I am), with an OBE to his name and other numerous accolades including South African Award, without further due, South Africa’s most celebrated son Johnny Cleg is coming to Zambia for one night only. For those of you who are not familiar with Le Zoulou Blanc (The White Zulu) and his sound, Asimbonaga aka the Mandela song is a good start.
