KB Lays It All Down In His Diary: My Diary Album Review

Review Author. Sir Kempson Ari Mabuluki We Yulu Jaffe Joffer
@ZambiazHarshTag   @KempsonAri

Visual verbatim: @killa_kamy

One time for my boy @killa_kamy congrates on your new album "My dairy"

On 14th November the endorsement (via Facebook) of My Diary pt.2 by Zambian veteran rapper C.R.I.$.I.$ aka Mr. Swagger @hiphopcrisis: “The Zambian #HipHop joint that I’m feeling right now! Good looking out to KB, B-Mak, Thugga @Iam_Thugga, K.R.Y.T.I.C @Kryticismusic and Wezi @Wezi_heartsound. Thanks for the shout out too!!” went viral veteran as did the track which is sits at 15272 downloads (at the time of this review) make it 15273 because I also just hit download. On 15th December Mr. @killa_kamy himself made it official: “Listened to my diary part 2 14 times straight.. this felt like listening to One Mic by Nas.. the hip hop we grew up listening to..” My Diary Pt.2 is not on the album, perhaps it will appear as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of My Diary. However hardcore fans can still download this trill master piece from the link at the end of this article. I see this single making a few song of the year lists and hitting serious download figures.

I was steady rolling down Kafue road with some undammed hooligans, when suddenly @CleoMulenga & @ThisisUrbanHype Turn Up the situation which is track one on the album and sets the tone for a rollercoaster ride. I knew the first single of My Diary was official when the home girl @leelabee tweeted the track was Dope! Summer party and festivities written all over it, the RnB trio slays the hook and the Ice Queen goes trigger happy with some feel good verses.  That throw back vintage K-Amy sound can be heard on Ninani ft. the seasoned veteran singer/hook man/songwriter Izrael (formally known as Exile). No one record is similar to the other, you get I diverse feel of the labels founder’s vision but also a sense of who KB is as a producer. This versatility is further experienced on track 2 Yanka Phone where he switches up and raps. KB has something for everyone including old skool diehards.

My Diary features an array of Zambian musicians both old school and new school including the gifted Chef 187 @Chefy187, each contributing to making the project dissimilar but cohesive in the same breath. The idea of features can work in favor of or against the producer who may over experiment which is not the case with this album. The participation of the K-Amy roaster such as Ben also gives the album another dimension, much like when rappers who own labels have their artists actively feature on their albums. Most notable was the return of the prodigal Alpha Romeo who raps “Nabwela futi mu barrack” on Where Have You Been, a poignant reminder of just how many careers the label has spawned and also highlights growth. Wezi burnishes the hook of the stirring story with the rich soulfulness of her voice bellowing the essence of the entire album which is the struggles of the industry and its soldiers but also a celebration of the great efforts thus far. It is easily my favourite track of the album. Mr. Eddie Black @Eddieblackbaby goes in deep on his verse on the original My Diary and also has some rhetorical questions of his own. Despite the all star cast in his diary, KB reminds the masses why he is relevant to Zambian music as an artiste and expresses just how vast his repertoire is.

The initial interview/listening session was suppose to go down before the album dropped, during the build up to the main event on Thursday the 12th of November 2015. However I wanted to experience the album for myself however in the environment it was created, and interact with Killa Beats away from the noise and bias of the public. Thus we sat down like grown folk in his modest studio (nothing modest about the sound though it beams out), and listened to the album track for track after the dust had settled and hype had muted down with clarity.

This review as is My Diary is long overdue, perhaps also a befitting tribute to the late LBC who spurred on his compadre KB to release an album. Everyone I met during that tragic first week of December remembers seeing the legend at the album listening session, supporting his comrade as time had ordained.

Shout to & for sharing a stage last nite at media launch. A win for Hip Hop

#LBCForever respect to the OG, thank you for cheering on My Diary, the album that has brought the music industry together again in and out of the studio. I see this LP making the list of nominees for various awards and taking home a few along with the pack of accomplices who contributed to this tour de force. A varied album with a classic feel, yes I have a favourite cut on the record (I’m impartial and won’t tell you what it is) it makes the grade of top 5 albums of 2015, salute KB @Killa_kamy lays it all down in his diary and gets an 8/10, its out of the park.

Stone Cold Joss and Nexus Rocked The Web All Night Long: Joss Brought The Soul. Nexus Brought The Funk

Lyrics Author. Sir Kempson Ari Mabuluki We Yulu Jaffe Joffer

@ZambiazHarshTag   @KempsonAri

Visual Verbatim by: Kempson Visual (Epic Publicity, Social Media Esquire), Wezi, @JossStone Social Media aka Twitter

Writing Sound Track by: Busta Rhymes @BustaRhymes – Show Me What You Got for Me, Till It’s Gone, Future/FreeBands @1Future – Look Ahead, Big Pun – Beware, Powderfinger @Powderfinger_au – Bless My Soul, Erykah Badu @fatbellybella – Me, Darondo – Let My People Go, Frank Stallone @Stallone – Take You back, Lebo Mathosa – Free, Joss Stone @JossStone – Way Oh, Let Me Breath, Super Duper Love

M
id way through the show she asked the audience, “Do you know why I’m here?” Her riposte was music, with a knowing smile on her face. “Everything I do in life, everywhere I go and whatever decisions I make are based on music.” The sentiments of the artiste tallied with those of the owner of the venue Ben Thurairatnam who cited that his mission on behalf of his establishment was, “delivering good entertainment for music aficionados in Zambia.” On 21st November 2015, The Web delivered a world class Sold Out show. Ladies and gentleman the World Famous soul singer/songwriter sensation… Joss Stone @JossStone

The 550 strong capacity crowd of soul and blues enthusiast jam packed The Web. The multi genre hub of live music was chosen as one of the stops by the Grammy award winning performer and soul songstress on her Total World Tour. After 2 – 3 months of organising, the wait was over. Up first on stage to kick off the gig and move the crowd was Wezi @Wezi_heartsound. The Zambian songbird is the voice you’ve been hearing on award winning hooks and verses on the airwaves, in clubs and performing live of stage. Her rendition of Translate by Zone Fam has been the source of much social media buzz and with just cause. That energy and vibe definitely translated into her captivating
performance.  Her act was enchanting and as natural and beautiful as her voice and smile. She has clearly matured as an artist and her rich tone oozed poise and her deportment showed tones of a budding songbird with promise of yet more melodies in her career as a performer.

She had played Botswana the night before and Zambia was next to receive the gift of soul on her nonstop global excursion which begun in April 2004 of 204 countries. With an illustrious career that has spun over a decade, the headline act’s set is always causes of debate and difficult to predict. Soon as she stepped onto the brightly lit stage to an ovation of shouts, applause and whistling and began to bellow the first notes of Super Duper Love (Are You Diggin’ on Me), I knew my inner musical Jedi was strong. The three man band of a lead/rhythm guitarist, the rubber band man on bass and the drummer from the ATL, did not miss a beat and the two soul sisters on backing vocals in tow did not miss a wail. Her selection showed depth and an elaborate career, a mix of new material from her 2015 rich reggae and dub laden release Water for Your Soul such as Way Oh and This Ain’t Love, and classic substance such as What We Gonna Do Now (which features rapper Common on the album version). Her aura and everything about her entire proceedings was pure synergy and was in synch with the crowd, so much so such that she even had a quick cup in between notes as any Brit would *laughs*. She signed off with Right to Be Wrong
which was the second single from her critically acclaimed sophomore album Mind, Body and Soul. It was a charged performance which left the crowd chanting for more. An honour to host you in Zambia Miss Stone, keep that soul coming. How did I forget to mention how she did justice with her rendition of I Put a Spell on You by the icon Ray Charles, yes the show was special, something magical and spiritual.

The Music was far from over for the night, the house band was not done with the entertainment and had an ace up there sleeve. Nexus brought the funk the old school way and kept revelers on the dance floor getting their shuffle and two
step on. Their set kicked off with Shalamar’s Night to Remember, and kept it coming with that Luther classic All My Love, the Kool & The Gang anthem Get Down On It, that Lionel hit All Night Long and finally simmered it down with Chaka’s Can’t Nobody. The lead vocalist Nathalie did not relent neither did the
tight neat ensemble on the beat and tempo, carrying on where Miss Stone had left off. And now for an intermission by Jude (the manager of The Web), who blew the situation to another stratosphere when he brought the house down with the Sexual Chocolate classic You Sexy Thing. Indeed the funk knows no bounds, and he too left it all on stage in that single performance. I could have been at the Apollo in Harlem at a performance of funk and soul grooves,
even Joss’s band members who blended into the crowd approved of the heat that was and is Nexus. It was poignant and out of sight.

Yes Jocelyn showed up and silenced the critics and non believers with a stellar sonic musical performance with her ensemble. During her three day visit of Zambia, Joss also collaborated with Zambian musical virtuoso Mumba Yachi on a
song and visited the Lilayi Elephant Nursery
(Orphanage). The Web and its management did a tremendous job of organizing a flawless event without any incident. This blogger on behalf of the freelance movement nation and worldwide thanks you for accommodating the craft of scribes at this occasion and august musical juncture. This gig is testament that Zambia is more than ready for more international acts, and the Web are on the good foot as a shining example as venue which has the state of the art equipment necessary to host world class events. “As The Web,
our aim is to organize a successful gig. It’s good for the Zambian scene as far as music is concerned
.” Applause Ben, Joss brought some Stone cold soul and Nexus brought the funk all night long!

The Dreams (Reality TV Show Finally) Live on 28th November 2015

The Second Annual New Year’s Eve shindig (K 100 a pop) 31st December 2015
